Some people are saying that the world may have begun to arrive at something called ‘peak populism’. Talleyrand isn’t so certain.
This video making the rounds shows a long trail of Afghans heading west across Iran. It was reportedly taken the other day. Expect to see more of this, not only in the usual unstable places, but also in others of long-standing that have been quiescent. Notably, in Cuba and Haiti, it’s only a matter of time, if political conditions in each place continue their downward trend, that the northern Caribbean will again become, like the Mediterranean has been and probably will also again be this summer, a human sea.
Expect Kamala Harris again to appear in a border state imploring the tired, poor, huddled masses on the teeming shore yearning to breathe free, to please stay just where they are. Expect some interesting results in the US midterm elections. Expect some loud, vulgar rhetoric everywhere from Chios to the Caicos. And expect much more from ‘populists’.
