Mid-October brings out the soothsayer. So, here are a couple of thoughts to ponder:
1 It is now clear that the American people did not want a gentle, calm, healer-president in 2020. They still don’t. What they want is a strong, even aggressive, leader to put the country right. Joe Biden is not that leader. He is, as predicted, weak and growing weaker. Americans who fear the consequences of the breakdown of the ‘vital centre’ have a point. The rest of the world should prepare for much more instability and even civil conflict in the USA.
2 The focus now on the Taiwan Strait obscures the possibility that there is only one ruler in East Asia who genuinely wants to start a war. He is not Chinese. If significant hostilities do break out over Taiwan, expect Kim Jong-un to make the most of the opportunity.
Talleyrand promises happier predictions later… maybe.
