To a few readers of tea leaves, bright days are ahead. The G20 and COP27 conferences have come and gone without any major blow-ups and with some smiles. Voters in a few large countries have delivered the message that a return to something like normalcy is in order. Or, better put, the defenders of order – that is, the elites who run things – have come at last again to realise that they can’t afford the luxury of political entertainment for its own sake, and have resumed something like governing. Even the right-wing Italians in power are going out their way to say the right things, mostly.
Do not fret, ye cynics and fans of disorder. The students and their kin, in Shanghai, Tehran, Saint Petersburg… They have feelings, too.
